Infrastructure and Economic Positions

Because of the long foreign rule, India generally has, among othre things, a rather good infrastructure.

Around bigger towns, as for example Calcutta and Bombay, the streets are developed very well; nevertheless, public transportation within the towns is rather rare. Since the independence of India, the infrastructure was further developed. This happened above all by lengthening of the road system, which is now more than two million kilometres long, and by the establishment of air traffic in the inland.

The railway, with a rail length of more than 62,400 kilometres, has still remained the main means of and today, it still handles the main part of the goods traffic in the country. Primarily the ship traffic is used for the handle with the freight traffic and goods traffic with other countries, for what also the most important harbours, for example Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, were developed.

Primarily, the air traffic handles the international passenger traffic. But also concerns-flights-net in the inland are meanwhile developed very well, so you can find airports not only in cities. Also in remote, rural areas you can find small landing-fields. However, these are laid out rather for small airplanes, but an Airbus A380 probably could not land here.

Nevertheless, in spite of the well developed traffic network there are still about 54 percent of the villages still without connection with the road system. Here is the traffic regulated with ox's carts and bicycle-Rickshas.

You can find industrial-economic positions almost exclusive at the coasts. In the inland is predominantly agriculture. In the south and in the middle of India, almost excludingly millet, in the north, wheat is grown. Around the economically strong Calcutta in the east, a lot of rice on wet fields is grown. Underground mining is also pursued in the inland; there is, for example, coal and bauxite. Furthermore, in coastal nearness you can find a lot of rice and partial banana fields.

Only the region in the north, around Delhi, is an exception, here you can find companies who construct vehicles and mechanical engines or product chemical and plastic, as well as electrical engineering companies.

Nevertheless, the area around Calcutta is most interesting. Here are a lot of iron mines and steelmaking companies. There are also various companies who build machines or construct vehicles.

However, if you compare the economic situation of India with Germany's, you will discover big regional distinctions.
